Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord GOD. My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
(Ezekiel 13:8-9 ESV)
One thing I love about God’s word is its consistency. We see themes throughout every book, every chapter, and every verse: sacrifice, unfailing love, our inability, and His ability. Yet there is one of these themes that I fear we have not heeded well. False teaching. In the Old Testament, people prophesied, saying that they heard words from God; however, those words went against everything He had been teaching His people. They may have had an ounce of truth written into them, but they were wrong to the core, and our God has no patience for that. Today, false pastors and false gospels plague us. The gospel of Americanism. The gospel of liberalism. The gospel of prosperity. The gospel of works. The “get to heaven free card” gospel. They all have bits of truth mixed into them, but at the end of the day, their goals are all to glorify one thing: self–not God. Check your Gospel, Christian. Does it line up with the message of Jesus Christ and the Bible? Do we care more about glorifying country than spreading the Gospel to the Nations? When we pray, is it for the betterment of self alone? Do we neglect clear teachings to make ourselves feel better? Please, avoid these false truths and cling fast to the one we know as the Lord our God.
Lord, thank you for consistently warning us against false teachings. Because of my own love for myself, I am so inclined to lean my ear toward things that misrepresent you. Cleanse my hearing ears, oh God. Let me vet every teaching against your constant Word.
