But the entrails and the legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall offer all of it and burn it on the altar; it is a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD.
(Leviticus 1:13 ESV)
Praise God for Jesus’s blood and body sacrifice. As we begin reading the book of Leviticus, it is easy to grow thankful for the newfound freedom we have through Jesus. In this passage of the Law, God told Moses that the Israelites were to take a body–a body that they would otherwise use for livelihood, a perfect body–and not only kill it, but burn it that a pleasing aroma might be sent up to God. It is that phrase that I am stuck on this day: pleasing aroma. I imagine that it was not the smell of burnt carcass that was pleasing to God. It was the sacrifice His people made for their sins. It was the aroma of hatred toward the enemy. Dear Christian, when God turns His face toward us, He smells the pleasing aroma of His obedient child. He sees Jesus’s purity and perfection as the sacrifice for our transgression. Let Him be your sacrifice. Dwell in His goodness. Become engulfed in His aroma.
Lord, thank you for sending yourself as a pleasing aroma to the Father. You did not deserve to be sacrificed, but gladly took it for my own transgressions. I love you so, Lord. Please show me how to embody You.
