But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused?
(Psalm 76:7 ESV)
Yesterday, Austin and I browsed the medicine aisle at Petco in search of calming aid for our dog. With Independence Day upon us, there will be a lot of riding in cars and loud sounds. Though this will be her first July 4th, I am confident that she will be terrified of fireworks–she can’t even handle my blow dryer! She is a fearful dog, uncomfortable with things bigger and louder than she. When I consider the fear my puppy feels–and even the fear that I regularly encounter–in accordance with verses that beckon “fear of God” it is easy to become confused. Fear is a negative thing, right? It is something to be fixed. Yes, but only when it comes to things of this earth. You see, the fear of God is knowing that He has an infinite, profound, all powerful nature. He holds the power to give complete life, and He has the power to bring immediate destruction to all. It is a fear that makes us love Him. It makes us trust Him. It is seen through the lens of love: our love for Him and His love for us. When we fear Him, we have nothing to fear in this earth because He is in control. He is magnificent. He is sovereign. Fear and stand in awe of His might.
Lord, give me a healthy fear of you that I might not fear anything on this earth. Anything.
